ALDS Playoff Notes

With both American League Divisional Series over and done with I thought I’d take a look at some of the more interesting highlights.

Here is a comment from the article “Is Jonathan Papelbon Being Overused?

Early: It almost cost the Sox when their bullpen melted down tonight.

Isn’t that the truth. After recording two outs the Sox in the eighth the Sox turned to Justin Masterson, who preceded to give issue a walk, passed ball and a two run single before getting out of the inning. Had Papelbon been available he certainly would have been called upon with two outs in the eighth. The Red Sox went on to win the game in the ninth but they also came close to giving up the leading run in the top half of that inning as well.

  • Jason Bay had a great series with a 1.352 OPS, a .412 avg and 5 RBI.
  • The Rays were able to swipe seven bags off of AJ Pierzynski in the series. In game four Carlos Pena stole two bags. In 139 games this season he stole a grand total of one. This helps to tell the story from the offensive side by the Rays. Steals and homers.
  • Rays vs AJ

  • BJ Upton’s output of 3 HR is a third of his 2008 regular season output of 9. Granted he did hit 24 last year, so the power is present.
  • The White Sox bats were quieted by the Rays. From the seventh inning and on the Rays had a 0.82 ERA.
  • Ken Griffey did next to nothing in the series, with only two singles in ten at-bats. Zero RBI.
