Cuba Wins Gold

For the 10th time in a row, Cuba wins the gold medal at the Pan-American Games.

Cuba defeated the American squad 3-1 behind a stellar pitching performance by the Cuban starter Adiel Palma and closer Pedro Lazo.

“It was a very tense game, very well played. Despite being young, the American players are very talented and it was not easy to defeat them,” said Cuban coach Rey Vicente Anglada, “Baseball is to Cuba what football is in Brazil, the nation’s favorite sport. You see children playing it everywhere. I believe Cuba’s baseball future is bright for many years to come.” Anglada said.

Mexico and Nicaragua were scheduled to play for the Bronze medal but the game was cancelled due to persistent inclement weather. Both countries will share the Bronze medal. I was suprised to see Nicaragua make it this far. Nicaragua does have one major leaguer in Boston Red Sox pitcher Devern Hansack and I was able to find a very interesting story on Nicaraguan baseball. It is a must read for those international baseball aficianados.

I am still disappointed that Nicaragua can make it to the medal round yet Canada can’t even qualify for the games. If anyone has the inside scoop as to what happened here: holla atcha boy.

Do you think Lazo would fly in the majors? He didn’t look too bad in the last WBC.

Did that SS that you’re all over do well in the tourney?

Yeah I think Lazo would fly. He would probably be a #2 or #3 on most teams.

Against Mexico, Yuliesky Gourriel was 2 for 5 with a HR, a triple and a stolen base. In the final against the US I think he was 1 for 4 with a double. Stellar D.
