It depends on the country. Italy and Israel have immigration laws that allow for people with certain incestories being eligible for citizenship. There may be others. That is the criteria for WBC.. if you are ELIGIBLE for citizenship in a certain country you can play for the country. To my knowledge, Americans no matter what our religion and who are grandparents are.. cannot automatically become citizens of places like England and many other countries.. as such we could never play for their teams assuming of course they had a team in the WBC..

That 15 inning game was a farce. The umpires sucked so badly they should have been called vampires. Just a painful game, luckily my team came out on top.

Asaf made it to the next to last cut. The league was doing some call backs he was hoping to be a part of. He is a young guy, I think 17 at the time of the tryouts, in a year or so I would bet he will be in the league.

I am not 100% sure but it is either grandparents or great grandparents have to be born in the country the player wants to play for.

No problem, I was at your site the other day. What the hell was up with LaRoche's running error in the 6th saturday night (boils the blood). I also listened from the 9th to the 15th IP last night to the Pirates game, and they were lucky to pull it out after stranding baserunners, getting thrown out at home, etc.

Nice article. Did the guy end up making the league? I think a book came out a few years back about a player doing something similar to this in Italy (played the full year).

Callum: Good call, I should have been on that ball. What is the criteria for this "jumping". Is it a number of generations, etc. Hell, many a player in Canada & the US could go and play for the British when tracing things back. I assume there has to be some kind of limit.

In case anyone would like to read a players perspective, or at least a player who tried outs perspective. Here is a link:

I know shameless self plug, but Asaf did a great job and deserves to be read.

The same rules apply for all of the other teams. As an example, Frank Catalanotto, Mike Piazza & Jason Grilli were eligible to play for Team Italy.
