Max Scherzer Bio

After one of the best MLB pitching debuts in recent memory we take a quick bio look at Max Scherzer.

Originally drafted in 2006 (11th overall), Scherzer experienced a biceps strain and did not play any professional ball after the 2006 draft. After recuperating, Scherzer and agent Scott Boras decided to hard ball the negotiations with the Diamondbacks. Part of the strategy included Max signing with the Fort Worth Cat’s of the independent league in the middle of April 2007. They held out until the very end of the signing period, threatening to re-enter the 2007 draft. The Diamondbacks acceded and signed Scherzer to a deal that included a $3 million signing bonus, a $4.3 million guaranteed contract and incentives that could add another $1.5 million to the overall contract.

Max features his mid to high 90′s fastball that also has some sink. His secondary pitch is a plus slider. He impressed scouts in the most recent AFL campaign, hitting 98 on the gun and displaying impressive command. Max made his MLB debut on April 29th, 2008. In 4.1 IP Scherzer retired all 13 batters that he faced with 7 K’s. His fastball got up to 98 miles per hour. Via Arizona Daily Sun:

“I was so anxious to get out there, so prepared to finally make my major league debut,” he said. “I’m just happy to go out there and get it out of the way. I felt comfortable out there, not nervous at all. I just tried to go out there and do my thing.”

Houston manager Cecil Cooper was impressed.

“You’ve got a guy throwing 98 and he had a nice slider to go with it,” Cooper said. “He kept the ball down, and when he needed that extra he went and got it. That’s a pretty good arm there.”
