John McDonald Gold Glove Update

John McDonald

A little while ago I wrote an article on why John McDonaldshould win the gold glove award.

Since then I’ve finally been able to track down some dazzling gold-glove-worthy Johnny Mac plays, or as they say over at Drunk Jays Fans, “The Prime Minister of Defence.” Here they are:

“What a play by McDonald, Jeteresq”

Nice video but it’s the same play time after time, ranging to his right and throwing from his knees.

Still, Mac will only start about 100 games at the position. He’s been the best while at short. The fact is that he’ll have played under 65% of the season at the position.

I think the award will go to Cabrera, Jeter or Young instead. It’s not Johnny Mac’s bad that he hasn’t played enough games, yet SS is the type of position where the lack of playing time can’t be overlooked (unlike 1st and Raffy a few years back).

Jeteresque is insulting. The video is poorly put together I agree, all the same plays. But, it is better than the imagination. One stellar play that is missing was a heads up play by Johnny Mac against Baltimore when he cut off Rios throw to third and nabbed the runner at first who was rounding the bag.

I think the fact that Johnny Mac is ‘buried’ in Toronto and his unspectacular bat will hurt him. The award is going to Jeter again. Voters love and incumbent and Jeter hasn’t done anything to shake their confidence. It is Jeter’s to lose.

i think Cabrera will give jeter some stiff comepetition, people around the league seem to really like this guy and i’m sure there’s just as many people voting against jeter as there are voting for him.
