News and Notes
Okay, now that Vernon is signed all of us in Jays nation (the 10 of us?) can take a sigh of relief. Toronto fans do however like to nitpick so lets get right to it. We still have some problems and Matt Roney isn’t going to fix them.

Â
I absolutely can’t stand the thought of a Jason Smith (who?)/John McDonald/Royce Clayton platoon at short. Why not Mark Loretta? The guy is going to play solid defense, hit .280 and get on base at a .350 clip. If you are going to sign Clayton to a short term deal, might as well throw that cash at Loretta and cut Clayton/Johnny Mac loose. Maybe it is because I have a bit of a Padres bias but I have always liked him.
Â
Speaking of the Padres bias, looks like the Braves have non-tendered 2B Marcus Giles. There is a good chance he will go west to San Diego to be able to play with his brother Brian. This would give them a lineup that looks something like:
RF Brian Giles
2B Marcus Giles/Todd Walker
1B Adrian Gonzalez
C Josh Bard/Rob Bowen
3B Kevin Kouzmanoff
CF Mike Cameron
LF Terrmel Sledge/Jose Cruz Jr.
SS Khalil Greene
I like it.
Â
Moving on, I’ve been told that Michael Young of the Texas Ranger is a FA at the end of the season. Royce Clayton has been signed for only one season. Since Michael and Vernon Wells are BEST FRIENDS, could it be true that Young could join the organization that drafted him originally and be turning 2 with pretty boy Aaron Hill? Yes I will admit it, like most Toronto fans I live in a fantasy land but without dreams I have nothing except Gregg Zaun’s frosted tips.
Â
Young will be another $100+ guy, so I’m sure JP will grab him.
The thing that jumps out about the Padres lineup (as you have it above) is the defensive skill at almost every position. They also have a number of gap hitters (Giles x 2, Kouzmanoff, Gonzalez), so it appears that they’re building the team with the dimensions of Peteco in mind.
You’re right, knowing JP he will throw a $100 mil contract at him. The league minimum for 5 years and a $50 mil signing bonus and a 48.5mil 6th year.
What do you think of the Alex Rios rumors?
I think the Rios rumors are blow out of proportion. For what JP will be asking, I don’t think he’ll get a deal done. Rios is a good player, but he’s only had 3 months of decent baseball in his MLB career.
