After last nights performance its becoming abundantly clear that David Purcey doesn’t belong in the Jays rotation. At least currently.
Rather than sending him down (as I called for last week) I think both parties (Jays + Purcey) would benefit from a demotion to mop-up duty in the bullpen. Why do I say this? Two reasons.
1. Arnsberg Factor
This is pretty obvious. Purcey has a greater chance at getting his shit together under the tutelage of Arnsberg vs a drunken month or two in Vegas with minor league coaches.
2. He hasn’t been that bad…
his first time around the order. See lazy cut & paste of baseball-reference 2009 stat log.
David’s holding batters to a low .194 BA and a respectable .341 OBP the first time around the order. After that everyone turns into Albert Pujols. So, at least from this indicator, David may still have some value in a bullpen role. Think of it as swapping out Purcey from the rotation and inserting Tallet in the short-term.
Another LiveBlog
We’ve got another mopupduty.com style liveblog tonight over at The Score for the 10pm meeting between the Dodgers and the Giants. It should be a good one as Chad Billingsley is starting for LA. Billingsley’s last game was the most impressive starting pitching performance that I’ve seen all season (including Doc). For the year ‘Bills’ is 4 – 0 with a 2.05 ERA
Sounds good to me! Let’s just get Litsch and Romero back soon. And Marcum. And McGowan.
Purcey pitched well in Las Vegas today.
