AFL 2008: Mesa 28, Surprise 1
That’s not a typo, the Mesa Solar Sox destroyed the Surprise Rafters 28 – 1 on Monday, October 20th.
Ouch… The safe assumption here is a few three run shots here, a grand slam there, yada, yada, yada. But this was not the case. Mesa only managed to hit two, two run home runs. That leaves us with 24 runs crossing the plate without the benefit of the longball.
Adding more insult to injury is the fact that Mesa allowed only three hits!
Obviously we can throw out the ERA’s of Surprise pitchers for the rest of the AFL season. Even with close to 20 games left to play, this beatdown will skew sample sizes.
RBI were spread around, with no player knocking in more than five runs. Philadelphia Phillies prospect Jason Donald collected four hits in seven at-bats.
What do I find to be the most shocking stat from this game? That it was finished in under three hours, at an official game time of 2:57. How long would have this game taken in the MLB?
How appropriate that a pitcher named “Laughter” finished it off.
Laughter is an appropriate name for a game like that. Unfortunately, he played for the wrong team.
