Who is the ‘smart moneys’ pick to win the 2009 WBC?

Current odds over at Bodog have the Dominican as the favorites, paying blackjack odds of 3/2. The USA is in second with 6/5 odds and is followed by Japan (6/1) and Venezuela (7/1).

China & South Africa are the dark horses of the tourney, with both coming in at 200/1.

For those interested Canada is 50/1

Over at BetUS they are using a moneyline with far better odds. A money line works as follows. If you bet $100 on a team and they win you will receive the payout mentioned below. Ie if Japan wins your $100 bet will pay +$600 for a post-bet total of $700 (original $100+$600).

BetUS WBC Odds

Dominican +170

USA +170

Japan is +600

Cuba is +800

South Africa is +20000.

Canada is +4000

Now I’m no gambling expert but with the format of the WBC tournament I think pretty much any team has a shot. I believe countries such as Japan, Korea and Cuba have an advantage, as many players on their respective rosters aren’t MLB property, thus they are able to stretch out starters to the WBC max and also use relief pitchers with a higher frequency.

Put money on the Dutch to make the 2nd round, and I have them as surprise team in the semi’s.
