This Week in the Golden League – June 9
The hitting has been hot as the Golden League settles into its 5th season. Every team except Chico has a team BA of at least .300. This could also be the result of questionable scorekeeping as the GBL fielding is terrible.
Brandon Taylor of St. George continues to tear it up hitting over .500 and leading the league in home runs with 7 over 57 at bats. Haikel Jova of Yuma had an awesome week he is leading the league in average and RBI’s while his team has been competitve at 8-5 but sits in 3rd place in the South.
Chico and Reno have been having trouble this year with only 5 wins between them. Long Beach and OC beat up on Reno over the last week who continue to have a team ERA over 10. Through 12 games they have given up 30 dingers. The Silver Sox had a Silver lining from pitcher S. Russell who pitched 6 innings of 4 hit, 1 run ball before giving the ball up to the pathetic bullpen who gave up 7 runs to the Armada, Reno held on for their second win of the season with an 11-8 win. The Sox were hoping former Blue Jays farm hand John Hattig would help them out this year. So far he has been hitting .270, he should get better once he gets in shape.
Speaking of out of shape former major leaguers, the mummified remains of Felix Jose have feasted on GBL pitching and the former NL all-star has been slugging the ball all over the park. Ryan Greusel contines his impressive mound performances. He is now 3-0 after the Snakes held on for a win on Sunday in Yuma. On a sombre note the Vipers, who were on the road last week had the 1964 Chev Impala stolen from Foothills Stadium. The vintage vehicle was part of a raffle or draw that was supposed to raise money for Calgary’s Children’s Charities. Check out the Vipers website at www.calgaryvipers.com to check out police photos and lock these jerks up.
